Following his 35-point performance that led the Dallas Mavericks to a 111-103 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, Kyrie Irving focused his praise not on his own feats but on teammate P.J. Washington’s contribution during Friday night’s game.
Washington, returning from a sprained right ankle that benched him for three games, scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half to help the Mavericks overcome a sluggish start in their first game back after the All-Star break. He also added seven rebounds, two steals, and one block along the way.
“He’s a budding star for our team and he’s showcasing that,” Irving said of Washington. “His numbers have showcased that. So I think it’s about time we started furthering that conversation about P.J. Washington consistently doing these things and being a great asset for our team as one of our leaders.”
Washington’s return stabilized the Mavericks, who have dealt with multiple injuries to key players. He’s upped his averages to 14.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on the season. However, his production has risen even higher, averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds since Jan. 3, which includes a 17-game stretch. The versatility he provides on the wing, guarding any position the Mavericks need brings a significant impact.
“When he’s not in the lineup, we miss him out there,” Irving said. “He’s getting accustomed to playing that five role, four role for us. Being a playmaker and stretch out the opposing centers to the three-point line, making their help a little more difficult at the rim.”
Washington, humbled by Irving’s comments, expressed gratitude for the recognition from a player of Irving’s caliber.
“It means a lot, obviously, coming from a guy like Kai who has been a superstar in the league for a while,” Washington said. “Obviously, being like a big brother to me, it’s great for me to be here and play with him.”
The Mavericks’ fifth win in their last six games improved their record to 31-26 for the season. Irving took over in the second half, scoring 21 of his 35 points as Dallas pulled away from the persistent Pelicans.
Dallas continues to navigate the season without all of their regular big men: Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, and Anthony Davis all remain sidelined due to injuries. The versatility Washington brings will be leaned on significantly, even after the team regains Dwight Powell from a right hip strain in the near future.
The Mavericks will play two road games: Sunday against the Golden State Warriors and Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Lakers.
