While the Boston Red Sox have added some talented players this offseason through trades and free agency, but they could still use more help if they want to make the playoffs in 2025
At this point, the best available free agent on the market is Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, who is coming off a year where he hit .260 with a .768 OPS, 26 home runs, 75 RBIs and three stolen base in 145 games.
Bregman still has a respectable offer on the table to return to Houston, but USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on Friday that the Red Sox are still seen as co-favorites to sign the two-time All-Star. The Detroit Tigers are the others, according to Nightengale.
Boston has reportedly made their own offer to Bregman, but it’s not better than the Astros’.
The Red Sox may make the most sense, as they’re a team looking for a right-handed bat that could improve their infield defense, and Bregman can provide both of those. However, they just haven’t seemed serious about pursuing him throughout this offseason.
Unless there’s a serious, last-second change, it feels like there are better options out there for Bregman.
