In a strategic move to bolster their offensive line, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed veteran guard Brandon Scherff to a 4-year, $49 million contract. This acquisition aims to address the team’s ongoing concerns at the guard position and provide more stability in protecting their new quarterback.
The Steelers’ offensive line has faced challenges in recent seasons, with guards Mason McCormick and Spencer Anderson showing potential but lacking the consistency needed for a championship-contending team. McCormick posted a 50.2 pass-blocking grade and 49.8 run-blocking grade in 2024, while Anderson had a 49.4 pass-blocking grade and 65.6 run-blocking grade, according to Pro Football Focus. These statistics highlight the need for an experienced and reliable guard to protect the quarterback and improve the offensive line’s performance.
With Russell Wilson now joining the New York Giants and Justin Fields moving to the New York Jets, the Steelers are looking toward Mason Rudolph as the new starting quarterback for the 2025 season. This transition brings a fresh leadership dynamic, and with an evolving quarterback situation, the Steelers will rely heavily on an improved offensive line to provide the necessary protection.
The addition of Scherff is expected to provide immediate support for Rudolph, ensuring that the quarterback has better protection and more time to execute plays. Scherff’s proficiency in pass protection, with a 74.5 pass-blocking grade and zero sacks allowed in the 2024 season, will be instrumental in safeguarding the quarterback’s blind side and stabilizing the line.
Head Coach Mike Tomlin expressed confidence in the team’s direction, stating, “We’ve made strides, but we needed more to protect our quarterback. Brandon Scherff is a proven guard, and we’re excited to have him on board. His leadership and experience will help elevate our line and, ultimately, our offense.”
As the Steelers prepare for the 2025 season, Scherff’s signing marks a significant step in strengthening their offensive line and adapting to the changes at the quarterback position. With a revamped line and new quarterback leadership, the team aims to improve upon their 10–7 record from the previous season and make a deeper playoff run.
