The New York Jets’ quarterback situation is interesting to watch this offseason, as the franchise has moved on from Aaron Rodgers.
Several options are available for new head coach Aaron Glenn which includes the draft (hold Pick No. 7) and free agency.
Tyrod Taylor and Jordan Travis are the quarterbacks currently on the roster, and Taylor is said to have the confidence from the front office if they were to go that way.
But that doesn’t mean the franchise won’t look elsewhere, and free agency looms as a place where New York could find some sort of value.
The Athletic’s Zach Rosenblatt, who was speaking on The Flight Plan, thinks Justin Fields will take over in New York.
“I wrote down Justin Fields, Carson Wentz, and Marcus Mariota,” Rosenblatt said. “I think Fields is the No. 1 target. I’m not the only one that said that. A lot of reporters, national and local, have said it probably will be the Jets or the Steelers. I don’t think they are the only ones that are interested.
“I think it’s going to come down to whether Fields wants to re-up with the Steelers because it sounds like they prefer him over Russell Wilson or if he wants to take whatever money the Jets offer him and go join up with Garrett Wilson and all of that stuff. I do think they have a real shot. I still am predicting it now, not with a lot of confidence but I am predicting it.”
Fields in New York? It isn’t the worst option. He was 4-2 as a starter last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, throwing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. He also rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns.
Not seen as a long-term option, more so a placeholder in 2025, with Spotrac.com handing his market value at $6.4 million APY, so he won’t cost much.
The Jets must figure out: Will Fields give them a better chance to win than Tyrod? Right now, that is up for debate, but New York is cutting the fat from the roster, and whoever is tasked with leading the offense, it won’t be for the faint-hearted.
Is Fields the guy for the Jets? It appears so.
