Jimmy Garoppolo and the Los Angeles Rams agreed to terms on a new one-year, $11-million deal, according to league sources.
Garoppolo was the No. 10 quarterback and No. 123 overall player on The Athletic’s updated top 150 free agents list. The 33-year-old quarterback spent the 2024 season with the Rams as the backup to Matthew Stafford. He played in one game, starting the regular-season finale — the Rams rested their starters having already clinched the NFC West and a trip to the playoffs — and threw for 334 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
A second-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2014 NFL Draft, Garoppolo has played 11 seasons in the NFL. He spent the first three-plus seasons of his career with New England before he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers midway through the 2017 season.
He made most of his 64 career regular-season starts with San Francisco, starting 55 games from 2017 to 2022, and threw for 13,599 yards, 82 touchdowns and 42 interceptions with the 49ers. In 2019, he started all 16 regular-season games, posting career bests in passing yards (3,978) and passing touchdowns (27) on the way to the 49ers’ Super Bowl LIV appearance. He was also the starter during San Francisco’s run to the NFC Championship Game two seasons later.
Garoppolo played one season with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023, starting six of the Raiders’ first eight games, before signing with the Rams last offseason.
In 82 regular-season games (64 starts) in his career, he has passed for 15,828 yards, 96 touchdowns and 52 interceptions, and rushed for another seven touchdowns.
Rams could still look to draft developmental QB
Rams head coach Sean McVay was very public about his hope that Garoppolo, who signed a one-year deal in 2024 to back up Stafford, would return in 2025. Garoppolo was also a possible option to start for the Rams in the coming season if they could not work an agreement out with Stafford during his contract dispute, league sources said at that time. McVay and general manager Les Snead also noted that they’d like to get a young developmental quarterback in the room as early as possible to learn from Stafford — which could mean drafting one. — Jourdan Rodrigue, Rams beat writer
