Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant holds the esteemed honor of being the only male basketball player to win four gold medals in the Olympics. His fourth came over the summer when he helped lead Team USA to another first-place finish in the Paris Olympics.
Despite being a regular in the Summer Olympics, however, it is clear that playing in the most prestigious international tournament of them all still holds a special place in Durant’s heart. In fact, the former NBA MVP could not help but get emotional as he opened up about what taking part in the Olympics means to him.
In the trailer of the upcoming Netflix documentary entitled “Court of Gold,” Durant is seen breaking down in tears as he makes an emotional admission about his Olympic experience.
“I come from a neighborhood where people don’t even talk to each other,” he said. “So much hate in the world, too.
“When people get to start laughing and joking for a game of ball, it’s cool to me. It gets me emotional.”
Durant also revealed how he is moved by the fact that fans go to great lengths to take part in the Olympics.
“It’s crazy to see people travel so long to come see their favorite player in the Olympics,” he continued. “They spend their money, they bring their whole family. It’s just dope for me.”
At the end of the clip, Durant gets even more emotional as he explains how basketball has impacted him and his family in a major way.
“The game has saved my life,” Durant said. “It brought me and my family out of a lot of (expletive). I’m just grateful for it. For real.”
“Court of Gold” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the players’ Olympic journey in Paris last year. It stars Durant, his Team USA teammate Steph Curry, and French phenom Victor Wembanyama.
The mini-series will premiere on Netflix on Tuesday.
