While the Spurs were without Victor Wembanyama who has been ruled out for the season, Chris Paul caused the Suns a fair share of problems.
Despite Durant scoring 22 points, he would still end up on the losing side as De’Aaaron Fox led the Spurs to a 120-109 win, continuing his strong start at his new side.
There is little doubt that both Durant and Paul have the utmost respect for one another given their impressive careers, but the pair clashed during the game.
Tensions are rising in the Suns team and after four defeats on the bounce their playoff chances are growing slimmer by the day.
Mike Budenholzer’s side is now 26-29 in the Western Conference which puts them at .473, this is the first time since the 2008-09 Thunder side that a Durant team was three games under .500 this late in a season.
Durant’s future with the Suns remains uncertain, especially if they fail to make the playoffs. He was heavily linked with an exit in the latest trade window.
KD’s mood would not have been helped by Paul, who recently showed he is a master of the dark arts following his cheeky All-Star skills games attempt to bend the rules, he and KD clashed in a war of words.
On the Paul incident in which both players were hit with technicals, Durant said: “He likes gimmicks, he’ll do anything to win the game so I think he was trying to get in my head knowing I was heating up.
“I think he was trying to get in my head, get me to react and get me out of the game. But as we kept talking I knew it was just a game or gimmick for him.”
Paul however did not spend the whole game trying to get under the skin of Durant, he also climbed yet another NBA all-time list.
The veteran recently went second in the all-time assist leaderboard and he has now gone second for steals.
Paul’s two steals helped him to jump current Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd for all-time NBA steals, Paul is now on 2685 and counting.
He has some way to go to catch John Stockton’s lead, the former Utah Jazz star ended his career with a staggering 3265.
