America won on Sunday night. And, by America, I mean everyone and anyone who decided to cheer against the Chiefs so everyone not a Chiefs fan. The Kansas City Chiefs really took their villain era to the next level this year. They won so many close games, most by one score, and they did so with a bit of luck, and some bad officiating along the way. But, the bad officiating has been for every team this year, but because they play on prime time every week, they get all the attention.
On Sunday, the Chiefs did not have the refs on their side. In fact, against the Philadelphia Eagles, I’m not sure there was an egregious penalty that went the Chiefs’ way. The officiating was pretty even both ways, in my opinion, at least.
But, the whole Chiefs and refs thing before this game, that whole narrative, was pretty crazy. I guess now the fans who hate the Chiefs because of all of their success can’t say anything now, right?
Well, they probably still will. But, at least one player is questioning if anyone will.
“I saw a lot of things in the media about the refs,” Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins said to the media after the tough loss. “There were a lot of touchy calls. Are ya all going to report that? Are you going to talk about the refs now?”
The Chiefs now have the burden lifted off of their shoulders of a three-peat. They now have the weight lifted off of their chest. Sure, it sucks, but there are still things to be happy about. For all of the people who don’t believe the crazy referee stuff, the Chiefs were able to get this far, three years in a row, themselves, not with the help of refs.
Did they get some favorable calls over the years? Yes. So did every other team. The Chiefs have some work to do this offseason, but they can get right back to the mountaintop.
